A counterbalancing mechanism for a drop flap in the form of a sideboard or tailboard 1 pivotally mounted about a horizontal axis 4 on a truck, comprises a torsion bar 2 parallel to the axis 4 and connected at one end to the vehicle bottom 3 and at the other end to the tailboard 1 by means of a lever 6 hinged to an adjustable rod 7 hinged to a link 8 hinged to a bracket 9 on the flap 1, wherein the link 8 bears on the bracket 9 when the flap reaches the position 1<SP>1</SP> so that the lever arm acting on the torsion bar 2 increases from R 1 to R 2 . A second torsion bar 11 is linked to the lever 6 by means of its lever 12 and a strainer 13, when an extension board 10 is used.
