Abstract

1,146,181. Power-assisted steering. CAM GEARS (LUTON) Ltd. 25 Nov., 1966 [29 March, 1966], No. 13749/66. Addition to 1,111,565. Heading B7H. In a rack and pinion steering mechanism in which an hydraulic servopiston 23 moves, with the rack bar 1, in a cylinder 21 which is rigid with a steering box 2 housing the pinion 3, the pinion is borne by a lever-like member 11 which is pivotally mounted in and projects from the steering box and is articularly connected at 14 and 15 to a slide valve in a valve unit 17 rigid with the steering box 2 and the piston 23 works in the annular space 22 between the cylinder 21 and a coaxial cylinder 19. The piston rod 24 is pivotally connected to the rack bar by a pin 25 and the rack is maintained in engagement with the pinion, which is borne in two ball races 12, 13 (Fig. 2) in the lever-like member, by an adjustable spring 6. The pinion shaft extends through the wall of the steering box through a flexible seal which permits rocking of the shaft.
