Abstract

1,145,771. Printed circuits. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. 4 March, 1966 [18 March, 1965], No. 9674/66. Heading H1R. In a multilayer circuit board in which a conductive circuit pattern is secured to one surface of an insulating substrate, connection is made to the circuit pattern by a solid metallic post electrolytically formed in a hole through the substrate; moreover, at least two such posts separated by at least one insulating layer extend in at least partial alignment within the multilayer board. As shown, Fig. id, apertures 13 are formed by a photo-etching process in the Cu cladding 12 on one surface of an insulating substrate 10 having such cladding 12, 12<SP>1</SP> on its opposite surfaces. Holes 18 are then etched in the substrate, which may be of epoxy-glass, in which case the etchant may be a mixture of HF and H 2 SO 4 . Cladding 12 is removed, and holes 18 are filled with metallic posts 20, Fig. 1h, formed by the electrodeposition of Cu on cladding 12<SP>1</SP>. The exposed surface of substrate 10 is coated with a layer 22 of Cu by electroless plating followed by a thicker layer 24 of electroplated Cu, which layers are photo-etched to form a pattern of conductors 26 and round pads 28 above posts 20; the pattern is given a coating 30 of Au. A layer of partially cured plastics material (32, Fig. li, not shown) is applied to the pattern-bearing surface of the substrate, and a second insulating substrate (34) clad with a single Cu laminate (36) is bonded thereon by heat and pressure. The steps for the formation of metallic posts and a conductive pattern are then repeated; and so on, for subsequent layers. When a multilayer circuit board has been produced, it is inverted so that cladding 12<SP>1</SP> is on top (Figs. 3, 3a, not shown), and the cladding is etched to form terminal pads (12<SP>1</SP>a) to which are connected the leads (38) of electronic modules (37), and mounting pads (12<SP>1</SP>b) on which the modules lie, and which are in contact with heat-conductive posts (54), formed through the substrate in accordance with the invention, which in turn are in heat-exchange contact with earthing layers (46, 52) on the other surface of the substrate.
