Abstract

1,144,273. Katharometers. CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE. July 7, 1967 [July 7, 1966], No.31499/67. Heading G1N. [Also in Division H1] The measuring filament of a katharometer, particularly for use in measuring the methane content of air, is made of 10% rhodenized platinum. In one embodiment, the filament D1, Fig. 1, situated in an enclosure 4, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), open to the test atmosphere via holes (3), (6), is connected in a Wheatstone bridge with an identical comparison filament C 1 in an enclosure 12, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), filled with pure air, and with two balancing resistors Rl, R2 and potentiometer LP 1 . The input voltage to the bridge is regulated so that the temperature of filament D1 is maintained at about 400‹C. in pure air. In a second embodiment, two measuring and comparison filaments D1, D2 and C 1 , C 2 , Fig.7, are used, each pair of filaments situated in a single enclosure 17, 12, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), respectively, and connected in opposite arms of the bridge. The enclosure 17 is made of material permeable to air. The out-ofbalance voltage of the bridge, indicative of the methane content, is converted in a coder to a signal whose frequency depends on its input voltage.
