Abstract

1,143,446. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 18 Nov., 1966 [22 Dec., 1965], No. 51657/66. Heading B6F. Type-wheel and type surface construction; aligning for impression. Type-wheels 12-18 comprise a hub portion and a plurality of flexible pivot members 126 which extend radially from the hub, each pivot member supporting a character bearing print member. This enables the printing surface to accurately align with the paper 10 to be printed when printing pressure from a platen roller 63 is applied. The type wheels and type surfaces may be integrally constructed from a polycarbonate resin having a tensile modulus within the range from 200,000 to 500,000 lbs./sq. inch or constructed from an acetal resin of similar tensile modulus. Type-wheel machines. There may be one or more type-wheels 12-18 each riveted to a gear 13, 15, 17, 19 driven from indexing wheels 31, 33, 35, 37 rotated through concentric tubes 32, 34, 36, 38 by gears 41, 43, 45, 47 from racks 51, 53, 55, 57 which are stopped in selected position by raisable stops. See Fig. 1, not shown. Roller impression arrangements. The impression roller 73 is actuated from a push button 105 which operates an electromagnet 107 to raise a latch 114. This releases a slide 89 which moves to the right by the force of a spring 88 until a stop 101 is engaged. The roller 73 is mounted on a spindle 75 in arms 77 with slotted engagement with a fixed pivot 81 so that the roller 75 may be lowered into impression position as it moves to the right. The angular slope 84 of the surfaces 84 causes the arms 77 to become disengaged from the latch 96 so a spring 97 thereupon draws the impression roller across the type-wheels. A separate resetting device is provided. Reversed or positive type. Printing is effected on the top surface of the document 10. Inking-arrangements. Ink is contained internally within the impression roller constructed of porous sintered nylon.
