Abstract

1,141,926. Collectors. SOUDRONIC A.G. 20 April, 1966 [20 April, 1965], No. 17351/66. Heading H2E. A rotating shaft 7 (e.g., of a welding machine) and a bearing block 1 in which it rotates are electrically connected by mercury introduced into the annular gap between them, the gap being made very small (less than 2% of the shaft diameter) to allow for the transfer of high currents. The mercury which is held in the gap by seals (13, 11), Fig. 1 (not shown), is led in from a reservoir 16 through a passage 19, and drains out through a passage 21 and a plug 23. The exposed surface of the mercury in the reservoir is protected by a barrier liquid, e.g. glycerine. Cooling pipes 9, 30 are provided in the shaft and the housing.
