Abstract

1,141,162. Nonwoven fabrics; water-proofing. CARL FREUDENBERG. 5 April, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 15129/66. Headings DIP and D1R. In a process in which a nonwoven material is produced by forming fibres into a loose fleece and applying a bonding agent to the fleece as an aqueous solution or dispersion, and in which a substantial proportion of the fibres are normally hydrophilic, that is of such nature that the loose unbonded fleece will collapse to a small fraction of its thickness if dipped in water, substantial collapse is avoided by rendering the fibres hydrophobic by treating them with a water-repelling agent before forming them into the fleece. The fibres may be of wool, linen, or regenerated cellulose. Water-repelling agents that may be used are mixtures of paraffin wax emulsion and aluminium triformate, and a partially etherified melamine-formaldehyde resin in which part of the ether groups are substituted by fatty acids. Non-hydrophilic fibres e.g. of polyvinyl chloride may also be present. In the Examples, the binders are; (1) a cross-linkable acrylate resin dispersion, ammonium oxylate and water; (2) a chlorine-containing film-forming compound and antimony trioxide; and (3) a cross-linkable acrylic resin dispersion, antimony trioxide and ammonium oxalate. The products of Examples 2 and 3 are only slightly inflammable. Similar results can be obtained by the use of other flame-retarding metal oxides, particularly if the binder or fibres or both contain chlorine.
