Abstract

1,140,681. Winding yarns. MARSHALL RICHARDS MACHINE CO. Ltd. 18 May, 1966 [19 May, 1965], No. 21161/65. Heading D1J. A spool-supporting arbor comprises one or more deformable members 7, 8 on a rotatable shaft 1, onto which a spool can be slid from one end, each member 7, 8 being capable of expanding radially, means 9 to expand each member 7, 8 so as to tightly grip a spool 17 surrounding the shaft 1, and stop means 14 to move radially with respect to the shaft 1 on rotation thereof to extend outwardly of the shaft 1 at or adjacent to said one end. The members 7, 8 comprise rubber rings positioned between a shoulder 4 and a metal tube 5 and between metal tubes 5, 6, respectively. In operation, the spool 17 is slid onto the metal tube 1 to abut against a head 2. Urging means 9, comprising a threaded stem 10, is screwed into a cavity 11 in the tube 1 by inserting a rod into holes 13 until the rings 7, 8 grip the spool 17 sufficiently tightly. Stop means 14 prevent the spool 17 sliding off the arbor during winding, e.g. due to the means 9 being insufficiently tightened, and each is normally held retracted in a bore 15 in the tube 6 by a spring 16. Upon rotation of the arbor above a certain angular velocity the stops 14 slide out to project beyond the tube 6.
