A machine for packaging articles e.g. loaves of bread, includes a blower 9 for opening bags 16 in a magazine 7 one by one, a pair of grippers 11 for transferring an opened bag between the magazine and a filling station 3, guide plates for receiving the opened bag and a pusher 4 for moving an article into the opened bag at the filling station. As shown in Fig. 1, loaves 19 are moved along a conveyer 36 where each one trips a switch 47 that initiates the packaging operation. After a bag 16 is blown open, the arm 17 swings through 90 degrees about pivot 42 to the magazine 7 so that the gripper plates 11 enter the bag mouth, the plates being spring-loaded away from one another so that they frictionally grip the bag. The arm 17 then moves back to the filling station 3 where the bag is drawn over spaced horizontal guide plates (5), 6, Fig. 6 (not shown), and the loaf at stop 38 is then moved by pusher 4 into the bag and carried away on a conveyer 12. When the package touches contact 48, a closing device 14 is actuated to place a clip 45 around the neck of the bag. In a modification, the bag is closed by an air nozzle (21), Fig. 8 (not shown), blowing against the lower side of the neck of the bag, so that air is drawn from the bag and the neck flattens. The neck is then gripped between jaws 30, 31, Fig. 9, and the edges of the bag, including a locating flap, are trimmed by knife 33. A bar 34 on the arm carrying the jaws 30, co-operates with a bar 35 to clamp the bag adjacent the loaf. The neck is closed by a clip.
