Abstract

An ion discharge laser comprises a quartz capillary tube 1 containing argon gas, and a coolant jacket formed by. an outer quartz tube 2 united at its ends with the capillary tube, the outer tube being formed with one or more corrugations which relieve tensile stresses due to differential expansion of the two tubes during operation. The outer tube may have the corrugations extending over a half or the whole of its length, and is provided with inlet and outlet pipes 3, 4 to lead coolant (normally water) into the coolant space 5 between the tubes.
