Abstract
1,140,047. Stabilized polyamide compositions. SNIA VISCOSA SOCIETA' NAZIONALE INDUSTRIA APPLICAZIONI VISCOSA S.p.A. 22 March. 1966 [2 April, 1965], No. 12511/66. Heading C3R. Spinnable polyamides stabilized against the action of heat and light are produced using as stabilizer an association of at least a copper salt, phosphorous or hypophosphorous acid or an organic derivative of said acids having the same reducing power or an alkali metal salt thereof, and an alkali metal halide, the ratio of copper salt to phosphorus compound being limited by the relationship: where XPh is the number of mols of phosphorus compound, XCu is the number of mols of copper compound, VPh is a constant: 3 for phosphor ous acid and its derivatives and 1 for hypophosphorous acid and its derivatives and Y is at least 8. The polyamide may be nylon 6 or 66 and the copper compound copper acetate or chloride. The alkali metal halide may be KBr or KI. The composition may contain 0À2-2% alkali metal halide and 30-300 p.p.m. copper salt. It may also contain 0À4-3% of an antioxidant amino-compound, e.g. diphenylamine or bis-(4-octylphenyl)-amine. In examples: the stabilizers are added to the polyamide monomers before polymerization; glacial acetic acid is present as a viscosity stabilizer; and phosphorus compounds used are phosphorous acid (4-6) and sodium hypophosphite (1-3, 8, 9).
