Abstract
Procedure for the preparation of new biphenyl derivatives of the general formula I, **(See formula)** wherein the radical R1 represents a chlorine or fluorine atom and B represents the hydroxy group, an alkoxy or aralkoxy group or the amino group and, if B means the hydroxy group, of its salts with organic and inorganic bases, characterized in that for the preparation of compounds of the general formula I, in which the radical B represents the hydroxy group, 3- (4-biphenyl) -butyronitriles of the general formula are saponified, **(See formula)** wherein R1 has the meanings mentioned above, in the presence of a base or an acid at temperatures between 100 and 200ºC or, for the preparation of the same compounds of the general formula I, butyronitriles of the general formula are saponified and decarboxylated **(See formula)** where R1 is as defined above and Q means the cyano or carboxamido group or a carboxy group, which may eventually be esterified with an aliphatic or araliphatic alcohol or with a phenol, or nitriles of the formula are reduced, saponified and decarboxylated **(See formula)** wherein R1 and Q are as defined above or, for the preparation of compounds of the general formula I, where B means the free amino group, a nitrile of the general formula II is partially saponified; and the eventually obtained racemates are split by fractional crystallization of their salts with optically active bases into their two individual optically active components and, if desired, compounds of the general formula I obtained, in which B means the alkoxy group, are saponified to forming compounds of the general formula I, in which B represents the hydroxy group, and, if desired, compounds of the general formula I obtained in which B is the hydroxy group, are transformed, according to usual methods, into their esters or in their salts by organic or inorganic bases or, if desired, for the preparation of compounds of the general formula I, in which B is the amino radical, a compound of the general formula is reacted **(See formula)** where B'represents an alkoxy group or a halogen atom, with ammonia at elevated temperatures.
