Abstract
1,139,380. Flame-proofing. CIBA Ltd. 24 May, 1967 [1 June, 1966], No. 24222/67. Heading D1P. Cellulosic fibrous material is rendered flameresistant by treatment with an aqueous solution containing 3-(dimethylphosphono)-propionic acid methylolamide at a pH. of less than 3, followed by drying at a temperature above 100C and washing with an acid acceptor, e.g. aqueous sodium carbonate solution. 20-40% of phosphorus compound based on material may be deposited. The pH is produced by the addition of strong mineral, which may be produced in situ, e.g. from phosphorus trichloride. The solution may also contain an aminoplast, homo- or co-polyethylene, or an acrylic copolymer in an amount of 1-10% based on the phosphorus compound. The acrylic copolymer may be produced from calcium acrylate, acrylic acid methylolamide, acrylic acid n-butyl ester, and vinylidine chloride. The cellulosic material may be cotton, linen, rayon, or a blend with wool, polyamide, or polyester. Treatment may be by padding.
