Abstract

1,139,102. Making composite sheets; jointing by rolling. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. 9 May, 1966, No. 20460/66. Headings B3A and B3M. A method of producing a composite plate, having a copper base alloy clad with a dissimilar metal, comprises heating the core to between 300‹ and 1000‹ F., and rolling together the heated core and unheated cladding at a speed of at least 100 feet/min. and with a single reduction of 40-80%, the cladding and core contacting each other at the roll bite with an included angle of 5-22 degrees. The core can be clad on one or both sides, the metals being chemically cleaned and mechanically roughened before rolling, if desired. The cladding material can be a copper base alloy, dissimilar from the core, or an alloy of iron, lead, silver, nickel zinc tin, or aluminium. In an example, a 99À9% copper alloy core of 0À075 inch gauge was clad with a 75% copper- 25% nickel alloy of 0À030 inch gauge. After cleaning and abrading steps, the core was heated to 750‹ F. and rolled with the cold cladding alloy at a 70% reduction. The rolling speed was 150 feet/min. and the included angle between the core and cladding 18 degrees.
