1,072,040. Making composite metal bearing strip; jointing by rolling. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 21, 1966 [June 24, 1965 (2), No. 17475/66. Headings B3A and B3M. In a method of making a composite-metal bearing strip, a bearing layer strip containing 7-30% tin, preferably 1% copper remainder aluminium is annealed so as to recrystallize the aluminium. The strip is cleaned and etched so that on the bonding surface the tin is dissolved leaving a substantially pure aluminium network. The backing strip is of low carbon steel and may have an aluminium or aluminium alloy coating on the bonding surface. The steel strip is degreased, annealed or normalized and then washed or it may be roughened on the bonding surface. The tin-aluminium strip is heated to 350‹-450‹ F. and the steel to about 450‹ prior to passing through cladding rolls which reduce the bearing layer strip by about 50-80% thickness and the steel strip by about 15-35%. Finally the strip may be annealed to enhance the bonds and recrystallize the aluminium in the strip. If any tin sweats out of the surface of the bearing layer, it is removed mechanically.
