Abstract

1,137,800. Cutting &c. apparatus. RANK XEROX Ltd. 5 Oct., 1967 [11 Oct., 1966], No. 45385/67. Heading B4B. [Also in Division G2] Apparatus for slitting or perforating copy sheet material received from a high speed automatic xerographic reproduction machine comprises a frame 160 on which are mounted a support member 220 and a backing roller 180 having a resilient covering 183, the support member having pivotally mounted thereon a cutter assembly 225 movable from a position abutting the roller 180 to a position spaced therefrom, the cutter assembly including an arm 250 having a shoulder 253 and having mounted thereon a pin 258 surrounded by a coil spring 260, the support member also having pivotally mounted thereon a cam 295 which is movable from a position abutting the head of the pin 258, so as to compress the spring 260 and urge a slitter, or perforator, wheel 277 forming part of the, or each, cutter unit 175 into engagement with the roller 180, to a position releasing the spring 260 from compression and engaging the shoulder 253 to retract the slitter or perforator wheel out of contact with the roller 180. The support member 220 has further pivotally mounted thereon a pinch roller assembly 230 which is movable by another cam 295 in a similar manner to the cutter assembly except that the pinch roller 290 is operative when the slitter &c. wheel 277 is inoperative and vice versa. To prevent the cutter assembly and pinch roller assembly from slipping off their supporting pins 240 and 242, Fig. 5, the support member 220 has mounted thereon a bridge 280 having downwardly extending walls 281 and 282, which, when either the cutter assembly or pinch roller assembly is operative, abut the arm 250. To remove either of the assemblies, they are pivoted about the pins 240, 242 until they are free of the walls 281 and 282. The frame 160, Fig. 3, has end plates 161, 162 connected by a pair of parallel tie-rods 170, 172 between which the support member 220 extends. The member 220 has a recess 231, Fig. 6, for engaging the tie-rod 172 and a bushing 233 for receiving the tie-rod 170. A thumb screw 235 threadedly received in the bushing 233 engages a flattened surface 237 on the tie-rod 170 whereby the, or each, cutter unit 175 may be slidably adjusted. The roller 180 is driven from a motor 190, Fig. 3, by means of a chain 197 and sprocket wheels 195 and 198. A set screw 301, Fig. 6, carried by the support member 220 serves as a stop for the arm 250.
