Abstract

1,137,156. Sustained release tablets. LOVENS KEMISKE FABRIK PRODUKTIONS A.S. 6 Oct., 1966 [12 Oct., 1965], No. 44632/66. Heading A5B. Pharmaceutical tablets comprising an active substance which will be gradually released on contact with gastric and/or intestinal juices are manufactured by mixing a granular tablet material containing the active substance with at least one release delay substance in solid form, preferably powdered, selected from a paraffin, an alcohol containing from 12 to 22 carbon atoms, a fatty acid or a natural or synthetic wax or fat, tableting the thus,formed mixture, and subjecting the resulting tablets to heating at a temperature at which the release delay substance will melt within the tablet, and to subsequent cooling. The tablets may be heated while suspended in a stream of air. The tablets may be coated, e.g. with methyl cellulose, in a conventional air suspension coating apparatus, said heating being carried out while the tablets are suspended in the air stream of the coating apparatus, preferably following upon completion of the coating phase. The granular tablet material may further comprise lubricants, e.g. magnesium stearate, and/or binders and/or fillers. The release delay substance may be montan wax, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol or carnauba wax and examples of active substances include inorganic salts, psycho-pharmacological drugs, diuretics, antibiotics, vitamins, analgesics and antipyretics, e.g. acetylsalicylic acid.
