[Also in Division B1] In the catalytic synthesis of NH 3 , the mixture of H 2 and N 2 is partially purified from inert gaseous components such as CH 4 and argon by dissolving at least part of the mixture under pressure in liquid ammonia, additional NH 3 being introduced for this purpose, and thereafter cooling the liquid NH 3 so as to release a proportion of the dissolved gases for use in the synthesis reaction whereby the proportion of the inert impurities in the H 2 /N 2 mixture is reduced. Preferably after the liquid NH 3 is cooled it is subjected to a reduction of pressure to release a further proportion of dissolved gases from solution. The liquid ammonia used for dissolving the gaseous mixture may be at a temperature of 65-74‹ C. Preferably the H 2 /N 2 mixture is derived in part from the gases leaving the converter and is washed under pressure with liquid NH 3 drawn from the product of the converter in an absorber. The gases released from solution in liquid NH 3 may be subjected to a second washing with liquid NH 3 and then recycled to the converter. The liquid NH 3 when freed of dissolved gases may be returned to the product stream before the initial separation of the liquid and gaseous components and before the heat exchangers for cooling the converter product.
