A roll grinding machine comprises a carriage 14 movable along a base 11, a grinding wheel head 31 mounted on the carriage and movable transversely to a roll 16 on the machine, power-operated means 41 for moving the wheel head toward and away from the roll, means for moving the carriage along the base, means for generating a signal having a waveform representative of a desired crown to be ground on a roll, and means for coupling said signal to the power-operated means to cause the poweroperated means to move the wheel head transversely with respect to the length of the roll in accordance with the generated signal as the carriage is moved along the base. The roll is mounted on journal bearings 17, 18 adjustable along ways 19, 20 on the base and is rotated through gearing 22 from a motor 21. The carriage 14 is movable along ways 12, 13 on the base and supports a transversely movable sub-base 29 having a pivot 30 about which the grinding wheel head 31 is pivotally mounted. Pivotal movement may be effected by rotation of a lead screw 39 having a nut 38 at one end of a lever 33 engaging a knife edge 36 on the sub-base, an intermediate part of the lever being pivoted to a second lever 34 which engages a knife edge 37 on the head 31 and has a roller 40 engaging the power-operated means 41 consisting of a vertically movable piston. Rotation of the lead screw effects infeed of the wheel head whereas movement of the piston controls the crowning of the roll. The piston 41 is connected by a screw-and-nut mechanism and gearing in a housing 50 to a motor 69 and is controlled by an electric circuit including a synchro-transformer 48 driven by gearing 44 engaging a rack 43 on the base during movement of the carriage 14 along the base 11. The transformer 48 drives, through an amplifier and screw-motor, a function generator which produces a signal which varies in amplitude with movement of the carriage' and has a potentiometer adapted to generate, for example, a cosine or trapezoidal function, the crowning produced corresponding to such function.
