Abstract

1,136,679. Sawing. CHICAGO WHEEL & MFG. CO. 13 Oct., 1967, No. 46845/67. Heading B5L. [Also in Divisions B3 and B6] A portable electrically driven cordless tool for rotating an eraser, grinding wheel, saw or drill E, Figs. 5 and 6, comprises an electric motor M driven by two rechargeable batteries B 1 , B 2 , and a hollow-drive shaft 46 driven by the motor through belts 53. The tool housing comprises two mirror image thermoplastic elements 15, 16 with cavities for the motor M, batteries B, transformer rectifier 28 &o. and having flat joint faces 30 held together by rubber rings 18. Shaft 46 is supported in bearings 59-61, and the bearings and motor M are insulated so that vibrations are not transmitted to the housing, by rubber sleeves 64, 67, 68, 69. The operation of motor M is controlled by a push-button mercury switch 73. When loosening or tightening the chuck 26, shaft 46 is held against rotation by a manually-operated, spring-urged detent 80. Chuck 26 comprises a screwed bore 90, Fig. 2, for screwing on to shaft 46, and an exchangeable split collet 92 actuated to grip or release the tool by engagement with angled faces 99, 104. A stand for recharging the batteries by connection to rings 35, 36, may be supplied. When a re-charging cord is used it is connected to the tool at 150.
