Abstract

1,136,349. Carbonized rayon. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP. 21 Feb., 1967, No. 8303/67. Heading C1A. Carbonization of rayon is effected by heating the material under non-oxidizing conditions to between 325‹ C. and 390‹ C., preferably between 340-360‹ C., then manually or mechanically flexing the material. Heating under non- oxidizing conditions is then resumed, to above 500‹ C., typically between 500‹ C. and 1200‹ C. to obtain a carbonized product, or to between 2000‹ C. and 3000‹ C. for a graphitized product. The heating rate is typically no slower than 200‹ C./hour, and the material may be cooled to below 40‹ C. before the flexing operation. Viscose rayon is the preferred starting material. The rayon may be in the form of a woven fabric, when the flexing may be carried out both longitudinally and transversely to the fabric. The flexing may be accomplished using calender rolls.
