Abstract
Fibres, thread, fabric, and knitwear of mercerized cotton are carbonized by heating to 1200 DEG C. at a rate of 3-5 DEG per hour between 0-500 DEG C., 10 DEG per hour between 500-900 DEG C., and 13 DEG per hour between 900-1200 DEG C., in a reducing or inert atmosphere. The product obtained may be graphitized at 2800 DEG C. in a reducing or inert atmosphere. The reducing atmosphere may consist of the combustion products of a gaseous hydrocarbon and the inert atmosphere may be nitrogen. The carbonized threads may be woven or knitted.ALSO:Filters are made from fibres, thread, fabric or knitwear of mercerized cotton which have been carbonized by slow heating to 1200 DEG C. at a controlled rate in a reducing or inert atmosphere.
