A machine for folding in and crimping projecting ends of a wrapper to enclose a cylindrical article, e.g. a paper roll, and of the type which rotates the article while supporting it on rollers, includes one or more folding elements on each crimping head and a fold pressing or consolidating member, the latter being mounted for adjustment in the plane of the article and to vary the amount of fold overlap. The article, a roll 3, is supported on driven rollers 1, 2. Each crimping head includes a rotatable mmeber 21 from which project diametrically opposed folding elements 8, 9. The pressing member 7 is rotatable in a housing 12 which is angularly adjustable about the axis of the roller 1. Movement of the crimping heads towards the roll is controlled by a feeler 17 on one of the members 7, the housings 12 being movable simultaneously by a lead screw. Adjustments, which comprise those necessary for variations of wrapping material, include that of the distance between the members 7 and the folders 8, 9, the projected length of the feeler 17, the angular position of each member 7, relative to the folders about its own axis and the relative speeds of the folders and the drive rollers. The roll may have protective end discs applied prior to folding in of the wrapper ends and further discs adhesively secured to the folds to finish the package (not shown).
