Manipulating apparatus, particularly for an ingot during forging, comprises a frame 1 carrying a relatively movable peel 12 and driv. ing means 14 rigidly mounted on the frame for rotating the peel independently of the position thereof. The frame 1 is mounted on wheels running along rails 39 and is driven by hydraulic motors 36 through pinions 37 engaging stationary racks 38. Peel 12 is supported at its rear by a sleeve 25 and frame 26 carried by vertical pistons in hydraulic cylinders 27. At its front end the peel is supported by chains 9 from a shaft 5 carried by a member 4 pivoted at 7 to the main frame 1. Shaft 5 is itself supported by vertical hydraulic cylinders 8. For rotating the peel about its axis, an hydraulic motor 14 is mounted on the frame 1 and drives through a coupling 16 and chain 17, a chain wheel 19 on the shaft 5. The latter is also connected by a driving chain 20 to a worm gear-box 10 on the peel. An hydraulically operated brake (23), Fig. 5 (not shown), is mounted on the end of the worm shaft. The gear-box 10 is biased against axial displacement by resilient members 31. Workpiece gripping jaws 24 on the front end of the peel are opened and closed by an hydraulic piston in a casing 34. An hydraulic control circuit is described for the control, including braking, of the peel rotating motor 14, Fig. 6 (not shown), and a further control circuit for the peel suspension cylinders 8, 27, Fig. 7 (not shown). This circuit includes a set of accumulators for absorbing light and heavy impacts on the peel. The peel may alternatively have a pneumatic or mechanical suspension.
