Abstract

1,134,779. Grinding. STANDARD ABRASIVES Inc. 21 March, 1967 [6 May, 1966], No. 13177/67. Heading B3D. A back pad structure for a finishing article 11 comprises a central attachment 12 for engaging rotary drive means, a resilient layer 56 having a smooth surface 65 for receivably engaging the finishing article, the layer defining a central aperture therein, and a resilient deformable body 54 backing the layer and affixing it to the central attachment. The central attachment has a shaft 14 for connection to a rotary drive means and formed with a cylinder 20, the lower surface of which has tabs 18 for engaging openings 22 in a coupling 24 secured to the finishing article 11, such as abrasive paper. A sleeve 34 is slidable on the cylinder 20 and is urged by a spring 40 to lock the finishing article to the attachment. A further cylinder 42 is screwthreaded to the shaft 14 and has external threads 48 for receiving a collar 50 to which is moulded the deformable body 54 which, in turn is moulded to the layer 56. The body 54 may be of neoprene rubber and the layer 56 of phenolic material which may be reinforced with fabric or fibreglass. The smooth surface of the layer 56 permits easy sliding of the finishing article to facilitate fitting and removal thereof on the structure.
