Abstract

1,134,221. Dyeing pile fabrics. COURTAULDS Ltd. 25 Feb., 1966 [29 Jan., 1965], No. 3971/65. Heading D1B. Pile fabrics containing hydrophobic fibres in the pile are dyed by impregnating them with a dye medium containing a foaming agent which encourages the formation of foam when subjected to heat at at least 90‹C and subsequently subjecting the fabric to a heat treatment at at least 90‹C. The foaming agent should have gas forming and foam stabilising properties and may be a single compound, e.g. an amine oxide having a polar group and a hydrocarbon chain e.g. N-dodecylmorpholine oxide or may be a mixture containing e.g., a quaternary ammonium salt, e.g. trimethyl-N-hexadecylammonium chloride and a volatile compound e.g. methanol or ethanol. The heating is preferably accomplished with steam at about 100‹C. The fabrics may be of nylon, polyester, acrylic, modacrylic or cellulose acetate fibres which may be mixed with non-hydrophobic fibres, e.g. viscose, and be in the form of carpets, velvets, fleece fabrics, simulated furs, blankets and napped fabrics. The dye medium may be applied by spraying, padding or printing and may also contain thickeners; in the Examples the auxiliaries coemployed are ethylene carbonate, sodium chlorate and urea.
