[Also in Division F1] A hydrostatic transmission comprises an I.C. engine of the free piston type, Fig. 1, not shown, having a plunger 2 affixed to each end of the piston, each plunger 2 being in a cylinder 1 and delivers liquid via valve 4 to a motor B, liquid being drawn from sump 7 through valve 3. Pulse dampers C, D adjacent valves 3, 4 each comprise a diaphragm 10c held between perforated cups 11c, 12c and being acted on by liquid on one side and gaseous pressure corresponding to the mean intake or delivery pressures on the other side. The pump capacity is controlled by a device E comprising a membrane 21 supported by a perforated tube 22 and acted on by liquid pressure from the pump and variable gaseous pressure from source S, this latter pressure being proportional to engine output torque, as described in French Specification 1,350,753. On the pump delivery stroke liquid enters device E until pressures are equalized on opposite sides of membrane 21 and the remainder of the liquid is delivered to motor B through valve 4; on the suction the membrane 21 is moved to open a valve 23, 24 to connect source S to device E. 1,132,974.
