Books are conveyed by opposed runs of endless roller chain conveyers 2, 3. The rollers of the operative run of the chain 3 bear against a fixed rail 36 while the rollers (35) (Fig. 4, not shown) of the chain 2 bear against a second rail 36a which is carried by a member 12. The latter is connected through a linkage 37, 40, 43 with a spring 46 bearing on the frame through a selfaligning ball-bearing 44. By rotating a handle 17 the position of the chain 2 relative to the chain 3 may thus be varied. Parallel alignment of the movable rail 36a is maintained by a rod 15 rigid with the member 12 and connected by a rack 15a with a pinion 19a on a shaft 19. Rotation of the latter actuates a rod 16 by a rack-andpinion mechanism 19b. The rod 16 is connected to the member 12 in the same manner as the connection of the latter to the rod 15. Each chain 2, 3, comprises links load engaging plates (28) (Fig. 4, not shown) and connected by pivot pins 33 which carry the rollers (35). The latter in addition to bearing on the rails 36 and 36a engage the power transmitting sockets of the chain driving sprockets 4, 5. The books are also engaged by stationary girders 14, 14 carried by the members 12, 13.
