Abstract
1,130,841. Blowing lances. W. V. BERRY. 28 Feb., 1966 [2 April, 1965], No. 8723/66. Heading F4B. An oxygen lance comprises a shank 54, consisting of three concentric tubes 56, 58 and 60, and a nozzle formed with three projecting outlet conduits 46, (48, 50), each of which is water-cooled and supplied with oxygen from a central passage 14, the coolant being supplied to, and withdrawn from, the nozzle by passages 32 and 30 respectively, and is circulated to the extremities of the conduits by means of channels 66. The internal configuration of each conduit is that of a Laval nozzle, with a cylindrical portion extending from its end 26 to the outlet port 22. The nozzle base portion (40, Fig. 3, not shown), is spherical and aerodynamically shaped so that gases from the furnace drawn into the central region between the conduits, converge and form a central streamline flow along the nozzle axis and between the three oxygen jets, which, throughout their length, are non-turbulent by virtue of the internal shape of the conduits.
