[Also in Division H2] An alphabetic matrix 1 comprises five sets 2 ... 6 of twenty-six AND gates such as 17, 24, 25, 26, each of which includes five diodes connected in a distinctive fashion to one of five sets of five bi-stable circuits 12 ... 16. A fiveletter code-word is produced by placing sets 12 ... 16 in the states necessary to apply a negative potential to the diodes of the appropriate gate in each set 2 ... 6, the five outputs therefrom being passed to a word-recognition matrix 28 comprising an AND gate 30, 31, 32 &c. of five diodes for each code-word in use. The outputs from matrix 28 are supplied to output control OR gates 29.
