Abstract

1,130,510. Woodworking. CAPITAL MACHINE CO. Inc. 25 Jan., 1966 [8 March, 1965], No. 3282/66. Heading B5L. A method of obtaining water stain-free veneer being cut in a machine between a knife and a pressure bar from a hot, water-soaked log comprises circulating a fluid in heat transfer relationship with the knife and bar, the fluid being at a temperature such as to maintain the knife and bar at a temperature above the dew point of water at the ambient temperature to prevent the drip of condensate on to the veneer from the knife or bar. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a log 10 is mounted on a table 11 reciprocated diagonally over a plurality of guide frames 12 mounted on a bed 13. A carriage is slidable towards and away from the log on the bed 13 and supports the knife bar and pressure bar assembly for movement about a pivot 16. Mechanism is provided to rock the assembly about the pivot to bring the edge of the knife into and out of its cutting position in timed relation to the movement of the table 11. The assembly includes a knife bar carrier 15, Fig. 3 (not shown), having a face 24 in which is formed a pair of slots 25, 26 and against which a coverplate 27 is secured by screws 71, the face of the cover-plate abutting the face 24 being formed with a groove 32, Fig. 7 (not shown), containing a sealing ring 33 which surrounds the slots 25, 26. The knife bar is secured to the outer face of the cover-plate by bolts 70. The ends of the slots 25, 26 are connected by bores 34, 35 to tubes 36, 37, Fig. 2 (not shown). The pressure bar 19, Fig. 4 (not shown), is mounted in a carrier 21 adjustably slidable along a surface 23 of the knife bar carrier 15. Three grooves 38, 39, 40 are formed in the carrier 21 and contain tubes 41, 42, 43 of copper held in the grooves by plastic 76 containing heat-conducting elements such as pieces of copper or aluminium. An inlet tube 44 is connected to one end of tube 41, the other end of which is connected by tube 45 to tube 42 which has its other end connected to an outlet tube 46. Tube 43 has its ends connected by tubes 47, 48 to the inlet and outlet tubes 44, 46. The tubes 36 and 37 from the knife bar carrier and the tubes 44, 46 from the pressure bar carrier are connected to a temperature controlling device and source of water whereby the temperature of the knife bar and pressure bar are maintained at the working temperature. In another embodiment, the cover-plate 27 is omitted and the knife bar is mounted directly on the carrier.
