Material to be cut is loaded into a supply container 12 and pushed by a piston 13 through the knife mechanism situated in a head housing 17 to form strips which are subsequently cut into cubes by a rotary severing knife 20. Carrier frame 24 comprises two guide rods 26 which are parallel to one another and the blades 25, the blades lying between the rods. The rods themselves are guided within rod guides (27) of metal guide frame (28). Thus, knife group 22 and guide frame 28 form a unit in which the group 22 reciprocates. The knife group 23 corresponds in design and dimensions to knife group 22. It differs, however, in that a plurality of slots 34 are provided in the guide frame 33 in which guide strips 35, which support the material to be cut relative to group 22 and the severing knife 20, are releasably engaged and lie perpendicular to blades 30. The strips are of a thickness not greater than the thickness of blades 25, and are of such a depth that edges (35<SP>1</SP>) Fig. 4 (not shown) of the strips abut edges (25<SP>1</SP>) of the blades 25. Guide strips 35 comprise projections 36 on their opposite ends so as to fit into grooves on junction surface (37). The strips are also formed with slits (38) through which the blades 30 extend. The guide frames abut and support each other at the junction surfaces (37), and are connected to each other, and/or the machine, by screw bolts 39. Each guide frame does not have to be separated from the knife carrier frame for either sharpening of the blades or for cleaning. In operation, the two knife groups reciprocate at right angles to one another in directions S, T. Also, the holes for fixing pins of the blades 30 are offset with respect to the longitudinal axis of the blades so that edges (35<SP>11</SP>) of guide strips 35 and edges (30<SP>1</SP>) of blades 30 lie in a common plane with a surface of the guide frame 33.
