Abstract

1,130,444. Mould and core materials and linings. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 3 March, 1967 [12 April, 1966], No. 15908/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A process for producing a metal casting comprises forming a shell mould on a disposable pattern using a particulate ceramic refractory material, a binding agent and a particulate fusible material, removing the pattern, firing the mould and casting metal into the mould, the fusible material melting at a temperature above the firing temperature and below that at which the metal is cast. The fusible material is a ferro-aluminium alloy with 25-50 wt. per cent aluminium or an iron silicon zirconium alloy and these may be used with low-carbon steels, low-alloy steels, high-carbon, high-alloy tool steel, or a ferritic or martensitic stainless steel. The mould is made so that the layer which contacts the casting contains no fusible material. The material in the outer layers melts in the casting process and forms an impermeable layer preventing oxygen from reaching and oxidizing the outer layer of the casting. The aluminium and iron present in the mould also combine with free oxygen present and thereby remove it from the pores of the mould.
