Abstract

1,130,397. Printing-machines. GESTETNER Ltd. 1 March, 1967 [9 March, 1966], No. 10423/66. Heading B6C. Apparatus for applying a cleaning liquid to a blanket cylinder 14 or a damping or priming liquid to a plate cylinder oomprises a fountain roller 10 partially immersed m the liquid in a trough 1 having a filling channel 5, a roller 13 adapted to co-operate with the roller 10, and means, including a cam 7 having a flat 6, arranged to pivot the rollers 10, 13 and the trough 1 as a unit about studs 2 so that the roller 13 is moved into and out of operative engagement with the cylinder 14, means being provided to vary the period of contact between the roller 13 and cylinder 14. The cam 7 is rotated by a pawl (26), Fig. 4 (not shown) and ratchet (25), the pawl being reciprocated by means (not shown) driven from the drive of the printing machine so as to make one reciprocation for each revolution of the blanket cylinder 14. The length of stroke of the pawl (26) is controlled by an eccentric (29) acting as an adjustable stop, and hence controlling the amount of rotation of the cam 7 for each revolution of the cylinder 14. The cam 7 is normally stationary, with the flat 6 uppermost, in which position the pawl (26) lies out of engagement with the ratchet, a pin (32), Figs. 5a, 5b (not shown) on the ratchet engaging in a slot (33) in a back plate (34), a latch (35) resting on the pin. Actuation of the cam 7 is effected by axially displacing the spindle 24, by which means the pin (32) is disengaged from the slot (33), the latch (35) falls to prevent the pin from returning to the inoperative position, and the pawl (26) engages the ratchet (25) and rotates the cam 7. As one revolution of the cam is completed, the pin (32) lifts the latch (35) and returns into the inoperative position in engagement with the slot (33). The rollers 10, 13 are held in contact by blocks 15, the pressure between the rollers being adjustable by means of a screw 16 and releasable by means of a cam 17 operated by a lever 18. The roller 13 may be rotated by frictional contact with the cylinder 14 or it may be driven by a chain drive (38), Fig. 7 (not shown), in either direction of rotation. If the roller 13 is rotated in the opposite direction to the cylinder 14, the surface speed is made greater than that of the cylinder to enable excess liquid to be scavenged from the line of contact between the cylinder and the roller.
