Abstract

1,129,887. Insulation for, and securing coils for, dynamo-electric machines. C. A. PAR- .SONS & CO. Ltd. 16 Dec., 1965 [16 Dec., 1964], No. 51134/64. Heading H2A. Means for controlling dielectric stresses in the insulation of a conductor where it emerges from an electrically-conducting enclosure comprises one or more separate capacitive and resistive members of electrically insulating material at least partially surrounding the conductor and its insulation and in electric contact with the enclosure, the material having a low specific impedance (as defined in the Specification) and the member(s) having an impedance normal to the conductor axis less than that parallel to the conductor axis. Preferred materials are synthetic-resin-impregnated asbestos cloth, asbestos felt, and asbestos paper laminates. Preferably the impedance of the member increases in a predetermined manner with distance from the enclosure. This may be achieved by making the member wedge-shaped (or annular-conical) with the greater cross-section next to the enclosure. 'The member is oriented with the laminations perpendicular to the conductor axis. Alternatively, a material may be used consisting of laminµ of asbestos fabric in which asbestos fibres rare interwoven with glass fibres; or linen, and in this case the member is cut from a block so that the laminµ are parallel to the conductor axis, but in each lamina the asbestos fibres lie perpendicular to the conductor axis while the remaining fibres lie parallel to the axis. In Figs. 5 and 6 the member 4 is arcuate and has slots 10 coinciding with the ends of slots in a turbo-generator stator (not shown) through which conductors emerge; it is held in contact with the stator end face by I section members provided on the latter, and engaged by keyways 12, Fig. 6, in the member 4. Each wedgeshaped portion of member 4, Fig. 6 (crosssection), co-operates with, and lies between, two conductors; the portion tapers in the direction away from the stator core and is separated from the conductors by insulation 5.
