Abstract
1,129,740. Blood dialysis apparatus. MILTON ROY CO. 9 June, 1967 [7 July. 1966], No. 26819/67. Heading A5R. [Also in Division B1] An automatically pre-programmed blood dialysis apparatus (see Fig. 1) comprises dialysis unit 1 to which blood may be passed from a patient by line 13a and be returned by line 13. Fresh dialyzate solution is prepared by metering concentrate from tank 3 with the correct amount of water from source 2 by proportioning pump 4, the water being heated at 5 before being mixed with the concentrate. From constant head vessel 8, the solution passes by lines 10 and 11 and 11a to dialysis unit 1 to contact the opposite side of the membranes to the blood. Spent dialyzate leaves by lines 12 and 12a, and passes to waste through valves 15 and pump 18. Before blood dialysis begins, the system is first rinsed, sterilized and cooled with water from source 2, dialyzate concentrate being shut off by valve 6, bypass line 16 being open through valve 15, and dialysis unit 1 being replaced by a shunt so that the hoses to and from the dialysis unit may be sterilized. The system is then tested, the dialysis unit 1 and blood lines to the patient connected, and the dialysis process begun. At the end of this process, the blood lines and the dialysis unit are disconnected, the shunt reconnected and the system subjected to a second rinse and sterilization. In operation, the temperature and concentration of the dialyzate, the used dialyzate pressure and the venous pressure are continuously monitored, and the waste fluid is also continuously monitored for the presence of red blood cells. A pre-programmed logic unit 27 is provided to programme the entire sequence of operations, and a visual display is provided by control unit 28, indicating when the monitored parameters are within the correct limits for the apparatus to be connected to the patient, if the apparatus is malfunctioning (in which event the patient will be automatically isolated from the dialysis unit 1), and what stage in the cycle of operations has been reached. Circuit features of the logic unit 27 and of the control unit 28, and the manner in which the sequence of operations is controlled thereby are provided in considerable detail.
