Abstract

1,128,074. Cladding pipe or tube joints. STEWARTS & LLOYDS Ltd. 31 March, 1967 [19 April, 1966], No. 17043/66. Heading F2G. A method of cladding a pipe or tube joint comprises providing a sleeve 11 formed of a flexible and protective material which is elastic at ambient temperatures, the sleeve having an internal diameter when unstressed which is less than the external diameter of the joint to be clad. The sleeve 11 is then expanded on to a hollow mandrel 14 having an internal diameter greater than the external diameter of the joint and the mandrel is positioned over one of the components which forms part of the joint. The sleeve is displaced from the mandrel so that it covers the exterior of the joint and finally the mandrel is removed from the component. The sleeve 11 may be expanded on to the mandrel by a frusto-conical collar (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) removably attached to one end of the mandrel the collar and mandrel combination being urged into the sleeve by hydraulically actuatable means, e.g. a ram, or screw actuated means. The sleeve may be displaced from the mandrel by hydraulically actuatable means or screw actuated means. The hollow mandrel is longitudinally split. The pipes or tubes may be joined by screw threads.
