Abstract
1,127,847. Bituminous composition. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 23 Aug., 1967, No. 38761/67. Heading C3N. A hard bituminous composition is made by mixing graded material with an oil and with asphaltenes, and compacting. The graded material may be mineral filler passing A.S.T.M. sieve 200 or aggregate retained on sieve 200, or mixtures thereof, e.g. 5-50 wt. per cent filler and 95-50% wt. aggregate. Suitable fillers are ground marl, ground limestone, cement, asbestos-fibre powder, and flue dust. Suitable aggregates are sands, gravel, porphyry, yvoir, basalt, limestone and moraine chippings. The oil preferably has initial b.p. > 250‹ C. and viscosity < 10,000 cs. (100‹ C.). Preferably the oil/asphaltene ratio is 20-80% wt. of oil to 80-20% wt. asphaltenes. Preferably 80- 97% wt. graded material is mixed with 20-3% of oil and asphaltenes. The graded material is preferably first mixed with oil and the asphaltenes then added. The temperatures for mixing and compacting may be 80-200‹ C. In the compacted composition there are preferably 1-10% vol. voids. After compaction a further heat-treatment, at the same or at a higher temperature may be performed. Bricks, blocks, sheets, tiles and pipes may be made by the process.
