1,127,264. Casings for dynamo electric machines. G. BIRAGHI, R. BIRAGHI, and E. BIRAGHI, [trading as COSTRUZIONI MECCANICHE LUIGI BIRAGHI & FIGLI]. 22 May, 1967, No. 23677/67. Heading H2A. An electric motor driven pump has an annular chamber external to the motor and connected with the motor rotor space which is at least partially filled with lubricating fluid. A canned electric motor has a sleeve 16 defining a stator chamber N and a rotor chamber which contains rotor R mounted on shaft 8 which is supported in bearings 1, 1a. The motor is enclosed within an outer casing which consists of a first end plate 24 having a transparent window 15, a dished annular element 3a and a second end plate 5 which is attached to the pump body and carries seal 7 through which shaft 8 passes. Lubricating fluid is introduced into the outer casing to at least partially fill chamber 18 and the rotor chamber. In operation the pumped water may pass through seal 7 and settle at the bottom of chamber 18 until a pressure balance is obtained on the two sides of seal 7. It is stated that provision of annular chamber 18 around the motor reduces the noise output and the settled water may be removed through plug 17a.
