Cigarettes normally delivered from a cigarette making machine directly to a filter tip applying machine, may be diverted into a container should there be a stoppage of the filter tip supply, or the cigarettes may be fed from the container should there be a stoppage of the main cigarette supply. The cigaretes 2 are fed from a cigarette making machine 3 by an endless conveyer chain 1. The cigarettes pass under a sensing device 48 and container 19, normally kept closed as long as the senser 48 detects the presence of cigarettes, through the grooves of a roller 11, over the curved arm 10 of lever 7, and to conveyers 4 and 5 for application to filter tips. In the event of a breakdown of the machine supplying filter tips, a solenoid 9 is energized to operate the lever 7 in a clockwise direction so that the cigarettes are retained on the roller 11 by a guide 13. The cigarettes are delivered to an endless conveyer 15 and carried upwards to the entry to the container 19. The container 19 contains one or more, e.g. 2, surface indicating devices each comprising endless conveyers 38, bridge members 40 and level detectors 39, and rotatable about shafts 30 and 31 respectively. The conveyer 15 and the indicating devices are driven by gears and chains from a main drive shaft 52. The diverted cigarettes are delivered to the left-hand side of the container 19 by the first indicating device and, when a predetermined level has been reached, the detector 39 is operated. A further gear train on the shaft 30 is then clutched in and the whole of the indicating device rotates anti-clockwise about the shaft 30 until the detector 39 contacts a magnetic stop 28. Diverted cigarettes then travel over the bridge 40 to the second indicating device. When the right hand side of the container is full the detector 39 of the second indicating device is operated and a further clutch on the shaft 31 is operated to rotate the second indicating device and stop the cigarette machine. If, before this stage is reached, the fault in the filter feed machine is corrected, the solenoid 19 is de-energized, lever 7 returned to its normal position and the cigarettes no longer diverted. In this event the container 19 remains partially full. If a fault occurs in the cigarette making machine, lack of cigarettes is detected by the senser 48 and a solenoid 46 is energized. This retracts a pusher 43 from the outlet of the container 19 to allow cigarettes to be fed therefrom by the rollers 24 and 25 until the fault is corrected.
