An apparatus for facing and centring workpieces by means of boring and facing tools comprises a machine stand 1 having longitudinal guiding means upon which two carriages 3 are slidably mounted, each carriage supporting a tail spindle unit 4 which includes a rotating machine tool 7, workpieoe clamping jaws 6, electric motors 8 and clamping device 11 for locking the spindle unit 4 and carriages 3 to the machine stand 1. The carriages 3 are raised on air cushions to allow movement for coarse adjustment along the stand 1, fine adjustment being provided for by an adjusting screw 14 and gauge 15. Each tail spindle unit 4 has a spindle 22 which is axially movable along the machining axis 20, preferably by hydraulic actuation, with switch 12 and cam 13 control. The machining tool 7 is provided with a cooling fluid delivery system and the clamp jaws 6 may act vertically or horizontally and may be hydraulically operated. The apparatus may be used to produce eccentrically located centring bores by clamping the workpiece eccentric to the machining axis 20.
