Abstract

[Also in Divisions A4, B5, C3 and H5] In apparatus for producing an artificial sponge from a viscose material a platform 18 over which the upper rim of a lower belt 29 travels has a flat trailing section which becomes transversely crowned at the leading section of the belt to facilitate draining of water formed during the reaction. The crowning increases in height gradually towards the leading section of the belt, and terminates in short leading section of substantially uniform cross-section. With a viscose layer ¥-inch thick, 36-inches wide and advancing at 5¢-inch rim, the maximum crown height is 2 inches. Two embodiments are described, the crown on the platform 18 being common to both, while the platform (114), Fig. 6 (not shown), in the second embodiment, Figs. 1A, 3-12, is made of a chemically resistant electrical insulating material. The sponge-forming material is fed from a hopper 70 on to the trailing section of the belt 29 and thence below an upper belt 57 advancing at the same velocity thereas.
