Abstract

1,125,812. Clothes airers. J. KERSHAW and R. RAWCLIFFE. 9 Feb., 1967 [11 Feb., 1966], No. 6050/66. Heading A4U. [Also in Division E2] A clothes airer for use near the ceiling of a room is stored, when out of use, in a plastics-coated metal housing 8 mounted by brackets 9 on ceiling joists. Doors 10, hinged to the brackets have projecting lever members 14 which are engaged by the airer in its upward movement to close the doors which open under gravity as the airer is lowered. The airer, consisting of telescoping rods 1 supported by transverse members 2, is suspended by a cord 24 which is secured at its end to the transverse members, passes over a pulley 23, and is wound on the smaller drum of a winch 15 passing through an aperture flange thereon so that the airer can be levelled. A second nylon cord 25 for raising and lowering the airer passes from the larger drum 17 of the winch, being secured to a flange, over a pulley on the ceiling and downward for hand manipulation, a cord grip device being provided which has a channel for passage of the cord and a pivoted spring-loaded member 38 with a cam face which grips the cord under hand pressure. In a modification the doors are hinged to the open end of a wooden housing.
