Abstract
Olefins are oligomerized in the presence of an activated cobalt on carbon catalyst obtained by bringing cobalt metal or an oxide of Co, deposited on activated carbon into contact with N2O4 at temperatures not exceeding 500 DEG C. The reaction is preferably effected in liquid phase either by using sufficient pressure to liquefy reactants or by use of solvents, e.g. pentane or hexanes. Specified olefins to be oligomerized are ethylene, propylene, butenes, pentenes and mixtures. A long list of oligomeric products from propylene is given, chief of which are cis- and trans-4-methylpentene-2 and cis- and tranx-hezene-2.ALSO:Co or CoO on carbon catalysts are activated by contact with N2O4 at temperatures not exceeding 500 DEG C. In lieu of N2O4, decomposition products e.g. NO2 and NO or precursors therefor e.g. N2O5 may be used. The treatment may be effected in the presence of an inert gas as carrier for the N2O4 or steam. The N2O4 may be used in gaseous or liquid phase. In examples the activation is effected in a fluidised bed.
