Abstract

1,124,608. Extruding. OSTROJ, NARODNI PODNIK. 9 Dec., 1965 [10 Dec., 1964], No. 52248/65. Heading B3P. [Also in Division F2] In a method of cold extruding a steel tube for hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders the blank is lubricated with a metallic surface film of thickness 10 to 60 microns. A blank formed from a steel tube is electroplated with copper or copper and cadmium and extruded with a punch 3 between a die 4 and a ring 5 on a mandrel 2 to form a tube 7 having a flange 8. When the extrusion is completed the mandrel 2 is raised to eject the tube 7 from the die and then held whilst the mandrel is pulled down again. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, a cylinder having a closed end is formed by backwardly extruding a solid blank which has previously been phosphate coated to form a cup 17. The cup is then heat treated, electroplated and further extruded to form a cylinder. During extrusion the metallic surface film serves as a lubricant and becomes partly diffused into the body of the tube. Colza or other oil may be used to provide additional lubrication during extrusion. A detachable insert 28, Fig. 11, may be used in the die 29 and it may have notches to form a cylinder having a rippled exterior.
