Abstract
1,124,366. Twisting wires together. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 24 Dec., 1965 [10 Feb., 1965], No. 54811/65. Heading B3E. [Also in Divisions B8 and F1] An apparatus 2 for joining the ends of a wire W after it has been wound around a parcel P is operated by a fluid control system which controls a wire gripper 10, a wire twister pinion 8 and a pair of feed rollers 4. The wire W is fed by the rollers 4 through the twister pinion 8, past the grippers 10, around a continuous guide track 12 and through the pinion again into the gripper. The rollers 4 are then reversed to retract the wire W, strip it off the guide 12, and tension it around the package P. The twister pinion 8 is rotated anti-clockwise, to twist the wires together, by a cam-plate 18 connected through a roller and slot 16 to a sector gear 14. The control system consists of a combination of hydraulic and electric circuits (see Division F1). The hydraulic fluid from the reservoir 34 is pumped along lines 52, 58, 64 to a cylinder 28. The cylinder 28 has its piston-rod 26 connected to a pivoted jaw 24 of the gripper. The flow of hydraulic fluid causes the piston-rod 26 to retract and the jaw 24 to pivot against a fixed jaw 25 and grip the wire. The hydraulic fluid also flows to an hydraulic motor 6. When the hydraulic pressure reaches a pre-set level, a pressure opened valve 68 allows fluid to flow through it to a cylinder 22. An orifice 70 permits a slight flow of fluid to the motor 6 in order that the wire W is kept taut during the twisting operation. The cam-plate 18 continues to move until a pin 92 on it trips an arm 94 of a double-contact switch 88. The hydraulic fluid is now pumped to the cylinders 22, 28 to open the grippers 24, 25 and return the camplate 18 to its original position to close a switch 90. The closing of the switch 90 allows fluid to flow through the motor in the reverse direction and rotate the rollers 4 to feed more wire to the tying apparatus. The last part of the feed is at a slower rate.
