Abstract

1,121,693. Continuous mixing apparatus; thermally-controlled reaction chamber. MATTHEW WHITE & CO. Ltd. 3 June, 1966 [16 June, 1965], No. 25418/65. Headings B1C and B1X. [Also in Division F4] A continuous mixing apparatus, suitable for mixing, evaporating and drying a starchy substance or for carrying out chemical reactions, comprises a part cylindrical chamber portion formed with a plurality of transverse and axially spaced chordal cavity members 2 which are hollow and in communication with a surrounding jacket 1. An agitator blade (10), preferably provided with a removable rigid or flexible wiper (11), is disposed within each of the spaces formed between adjacent members 2, the blades being of such size that they fit closely to, or actually wipe the members 2 and are fixed to a rotatable shaft member (9) held in journals 3. Any suitable heating or cooling medium, e.g. hot or cold fluid or electrical elements, may be provided within -the jacket, with inlet 4 and outlet 5 facilitating the introduction of this medium if in the fluid state, the medium to be treated entering through duct 6 and leaving through duct 7. A further part cylindrical member (12), having a steam outlet (13), rests on flanges 8a to complete the exchanger. Axial movement of the medium under treatment is achieved either by suitably shaping the blades 10 or by having the exchanger in a position inclined to the horizontal, or both.
