Abstract

<PICT:1120730/C1/1> In the float process the depth of metal 14 in the bath is increased to prevent gas seeping in through the refractory base 18 and in order to minimize the actual volume of molten metal in the bath a layer of solid material covers the greater part of the floor of the bath. This material (preferably graphite) is lighter than the metal and is held from floating by half key 41 and similar full keys transversely to the length of the bath and the slabs of graphite are loosely arranged so that the liquid metal is in communication with the refractory floor which is thereby subjected to the full hydrostatic pressure.
