Abstract

1,120,481. Magnetic separator. M.E.L.EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. 13 June, 1966 [2 Sept., 1965], No. 37503/65. Heading B2J. In a magnetic separator for removing ferromagnetic particles from a liquid, e.g. machine tool coolant, the liquid to be cleaned is fed via a tank 4 over the upper surface of a ramp 1 formed by an inclined plate 2 of non- magetic material. A number of permanent magnets 14 are carried by parallel endless chains (8, 9), Fig. 2 (not shown) which are driven to move the magnets 14 up an inclined path parallel to and adjacent the underside of the ramp so as to draw ferromagnetic particles from the liquid on to the upper surface of the ramp and up the ramp, the particles being discharged from the ramp by means of a rotary scraper 17 disposed at or near the upper end of the ramp. The liquid is introduced into the tank on one side of a partition 5 which has a portion 6 defining with the ramp a duct 6a through which the liquid passes to the other side of the partition where an outlet 7 is provided for clean liquid. The magnets 14, which may be of the ring type, are mounted in rows on transverse steel plates 15 fixed at their ends to the chains (8, 9) which are driven via sprockets and chains by an electric motor 12 which also drives the scraper 17 through sprocket and chains. The scraper may comprise one or more blades 20 which are preferably flexible and made of rubber or plastics. The chains 8, 9 and the magnets are enclosed in a casing 16 of non-magnetic material the upper wall of which is formed by the plate 2. The casing is supporting by a structure which includes a telescopic strut 23 to enable the slope of the ramp 1 to be varied.
