Abstract
A process for separating components of an oleaginous material by fractional crystallization comprises the steps of lowering the temperature of the material to a temperature at which crystalline centres of crystallization of certain components are formed, subjecting said material to crystal-shearing agitation so that the crystalline centres are shattered and multiplied and dispersing the shattered centres throughout the material and allowing crystallization of the components desired to be separated to take place on the shattered centres as nuclei, and separating the crystals formed. The process is described with reference to the winterization of summer oils, i.e. the removal of stearine from oils such as animal oil, fish oil, coconut oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, olive oil, linseed oil and peanut oil. The oil is preferably made into a miscella with n-hexane or other hydrocarbon, aldehyde or ketone, cooled in two stages, subjected to agitation in a blender, high shear mixer, homogenizer or sonic or ultrasonic vibrating device to multiply and disperse the crystal nuclei, allowed to crystallize and finally centrifuged to separate the solid precipitate. A part of this solid may be recycled to provide additional nuclei for crystallization.
